{"id":4917,"date":"2008-06-23T14:15:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-23T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging-pt-blog.liveservices.net\/why-does-paltalk-have-outages\/"},"modified":"2008-06-23T14:15:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-23T14:15:00","slug":"why-does-paltalk-have-outages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/client.paltalkconnect.com\/blog\/why-does-paltalk-have-outages\/","title":{"rendered":"Why does Paltalk have outages?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content_column\">\n<div class=\"right_margin\">\n<div class=\"content_body\">\n<p>I&#8217;m often asked this question so I&#8217;m going to save my fingers and answer you all at once.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Network_outage\">Outages<\/a> come in two flavors expected and unexpected&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expected outages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These happen typically once a week or every other week where the service is unavailable for about 10 minutes.\u00a0 During these outages we put in place new server side code which either adds new functionality for Paltalk or fixes some outstanding bugs.\u00a0 We also will take some physical computers we use as servers out of use and replace them with more current hardware.\u00a0 We try very hard to keep these outages as short as possible.\u00a0 A handful of times during the year we have a scheduled outage of a longer duration (1-2 hours) when we need to upgrade some major piece of equipment which we can&#8217;t run without.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>We try to do these scheduled outages between 1:30 and 2:30 AM EST, Some people may ask why that time? Why not some other time that impacts less people.\u00a0 The problem is that Paltalk is a worldwide service.\u00a0 When people are going to sleep on one side of the world, people are waking up on the other.\u00a0 It is no longer possible to pick a time when no members are impacted at all, so we just have to choose the least busy times.<br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unexpected outages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are well, unexpected. They can happen anytime.\u00a0 Sometimes they are due to a flaw in our code &#8212; *very rare occurrence &#8212; sometimes a major piece of hardware fails or our Internet Service Provider has an issue with connectivity.\u00a0 Other times it is due to the service actively being attacked by malicious people.\u00a0 We do our best to try and mitigate these and a host of other possible unexpected problems, but we know we are far from perfect and continue to endeavor to improve.\u00a0 During these outages we are especially grateful for your patience and continued patronage.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>* added by demand of Developers<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Note that including expected outages, our uptime last year was around: 99.5%<\/p>\n<p>-Pete (paltalk)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m often asked this question so I&#8217;m going to save my fingers and answer you all at once.
